Thies Roorda (flautist) started his studies in Groningen, with Peter van Munster continuing at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague with Paul Verhey and in the United States with the renown Geoffrey Gilbert.
He is flautist in the Dutch Radio Symphony Orchestra and a prolific player of chamber music in various kinds and styles. He plays recitals with accompanist Lodewijk Collette, and along with pianist Mila Baslawskaja and cellist Dmitri Ferschtman (the 'Hummel trio'), he specialises in Classical and early Romantic repertoire.
Several Dutch composers dedicated works to him, a.o.: Konrad Boehmer, Maarten Bon and Joep Straesser. But also foreign composers, amongst whom Jean Françaix, Gottfried Michael Koenig and Isang Yun.
Thies Roorda is professor of flute at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague, and at the Conservatory of Groningen. He is also a frequent guest lecturer, appreciated for, among many other aspects, his effective and highly practical approach of tone development and breath control. He teaches master classes in Holland, and internationally in Portugal, Italy and Switzerland.
