The well-known flutist C. van Tal was from the city of Utrecht . He composed, in the spirit of the time, smooth variations on a theme from Donizetti’s Anna Bolena (Anne Boleijn). This Solo pour la Flûte was published by H. Rahr in Utrecht. Van Tal was a member of the Utrecht Collegium Musicum where he succeeded the renown flutist Herman van Boom in 1847.

Richard Hol – Solo pour la Caprice pour flûte et piano.
Hardly known abroad, we still know Richard Hol for his symphonies, but also for this Caprice for flute and piano composed in 1875. The manuscript of this work can be found at the Netherlands Music Institute in The Hague. Richard Hol held several important musical positions in the Netherlands, but in Germany was also known as a pianist. He was musical director of the city of Utrecht and a conductor of various choirs. Richard Hol wrote the music for some well-known old Dutch songs: ‘Waar de blanke top der duinen…’. (1870, text: P. Louwerse) and the children’s song ‘In een blauw geruiten kiel …’ (1918, text: A.L. de Rop)
He was appointed Officier de l’Académie in France.

In the 18th-Century, composers like J.S. Bach, C.P.E. Bach, J.M. Hotteterre, and G. Ph. Telemann wrote their famous works for solo flute that consisted of several movements. But also a plethora of single movement compositions for solo flute have been published at the time, composed by a.o. Johann Martin Blockwitz, Pierre Évrard Taillart, Jean Daniel Braun en Antoine Mahaut. With great pleasure I performed a small selection from this, partly unknown, eighteenth century repertoire.
